The two members of the Parelsnoer Institute management team are its scientific director, Prof. dr. Ph. Scheltens and managing director, Maurits Ros. The former is responsible for achieving consensus concerning the scientific aspects of the project, for long-term policy and for participation in new national and European initiatives. The latter concentrates upon day-to-day management, finance and ICT.
To support the initiative’s core activities, a number of working groups and subprojects have been established.
Biobanks. By providing scientists with access to clinical samples in large volumes at one location, biobanks are a major boon to medical research.
Centralised infrastructure. To facilitate the collection and storage of research data, a joint ICT infrastructure is being developed for the eight Dutch university medical centres.
Finance. Ensures that the public funds invested in the initiative are properly spent and accounted for.
Information security. Ensures that data shared on local and centralised networks remains secure.
Legal affairs. Ensures that the project complies with all legal, regulatory, ethical and privacy requirements.
Quality. One vital aspect of the initiative is to make sure that project data and the manner in which it is collected are absolutely consistent, so that information from different sources can always be drawn upon by any research project.
